PARENT’S CORNER

MISSION OF THE BLC

Beaumont Learning Center’s mission is to share God’s love and provide a safe learning environment for children in our community.  We will create and maintain a learning program designed to stimulate and enhance child development as well as uplift, encourage and support parents.

Our main goal is for each child to feel loved and secure.  In addition, we work to ensure that each child will:

  • Experience the loving care of adults who are committed to the emotional and physical well-being of all children
  • Learn about emotions and feelings
  • Become aware that each person is responsible to show kindness and respect to other
  • Develop an ability to communicate appropriately with teacher and peers
  • Have opportunities to learn about art, music, science, math, reading and writing

PROGRAMS

TWO YEAR OLD CLASS

The Beaumont Learning Center 2-year old class meets Tuesday/Thursday mornings and is taught by Kate Greer (lead teacher) and Lonni Harberson (assistant teacher). We cap our two-year old class size at 9 students, which allows for more attention to be paid to your little one! Our two-year classroom is designed for students to learn through play in centers. We use theme-based learning and engage in circle time activities, learning centers, outdoor/indoor free play, story, music, and art. Students spend a lot of time making friendships. We will work with your child on potty training!

THREE YEAR OLD CLASS

The Beaumont Learning Center 3-year old class meets Monday, Wednesday, and Friday mornings, and is taught by Kate Greer (lead teacher) and Lonni Harberson (assistant teacher). We cap our three-year old class size at 9 students, to allow for more personal attention to your child. In the 3-year old class, we begin to introduce academic skills, and continue to use theme-based learning with circle time activities, learning centers, outdoor and indoor free play, story, music, and art. In the absence of a special need, children in the 3-year old class must be potty trained.

PRE-KINDERGARTEN CLASS

The Beaumont Learning Center pre-kindergarten class is taught by Shannon Markel (lead teacher) and Miss Carrie. We meet Monday through Friday mornings, and 3 and 4-day options are also available. Our pre-K class focuses on pre-kindergarten readiness and academic skills, but we also spend plenty of time learning through play and developing friendships! We use the “Handwriting without Tears” curriculum. The pre-K class is capped at 11 students to allow for personal attention to your students.

OUR TEACHERS

Kate Greer is the lead teacher for the two- and three-year old programs. Kate says, “I am originally from Indiana, but have now lived in Kentucky longer than I lived in Indiana– I guess that officially makes me a Kentuckian!  I have lived in Wilmore, KY, since 1996. I have three children, a daughter Casey (23), and two sons, Dakota (22), and Tucker (19). I enjoy reading, quilting, and hiking with my fiancé Michael. I have over 12 years experience in preschool and I am so excited to meet you and your children and begin this new year at BLC.”

Shannon Markel is the lead teacher of the pre-kindergarten class.

Shannon grew up in Minnesota, Florida, Connecticut, and Kentucky, but when she graduated with her Bachelor of Arts degree from Saint Mary’s College (Indiana), it was Lexington that she decided to make her home. Upon graduation, she began her career in Lexington at a locally headquartered corporation and enjoyed working there until her first child was born. After being a stay-at-home mom and regular preschool volunteer in her children’s classrooms for several years, she knew when she returned to work that she wanted to be a preschool teacher.
Shannon says “I am now in my seventh year working at Beaumont Learning Center and feel incredibly fortunate to be part of such a supportive community of families and staff. It is a joy to come to work each day and amazing to work in such a happy place. I absolutely love teaching preschoolers, and the significant growth and development that takes place for them over the course of the school year constantly amazes me. Their energy, spirit, and love of learning is an everyday inspiration and, as a pre-kindergarten teacher, it is my goal to continue to nurture this in every child as they prepare for Kindergarten.”
When Shannon is not in the classroom, she enjoys hiking, reading, cooking, and spending time with her family.

Carrie Moore serves as the assistant teacher in the Pre-K classroom at BLC. Carrie has been teaching in the Pre-K classroom at the BLC since 2014. She has been married for 22 years to her husband, Kevin. Together, they have two children who are no longer little! Carrie grew up in Lexington, and her children attend Beaumont Middle School and Dunbar High School.

Carrie writes, “Preschool was not the direction I chose in college. I have a Masters in criminal justice and had hoped, at one time, to become a federal probation officer. As it turns out, I love four year olds. I am thankful every day I get to come to such a wonderful place that most people call work. I enjoy the company of my coworkers; and will never stop being amazed by my little people. They do say the ‘darndest’ things! My favorite part of this wonderful position is getting to spend three hours with these amazing little people who are so excited to play with their friends and learn everything they can. We send them home tired, and they always come back renewed and ready to do it all again.”

Lonni Harberson is the assistant teacher for the two- and three-year old programs. Lonnie previously worked in the 2 and 3 year old classroom as an assistant teacher for the 2010-2011 and 2011-2012 school years. Since that time, she’s served as a substitute teacher at the BLC when she is available. Lonni is a mom of 2 boys, age 18 and 9, and she has been married for 20 years. Lonnie and her husband are sending their oldest off to college in the fall, and will have a fourth grader ruling the roost at home now! Lonni says, “I am active with the children’s ministry at our church and enjoy the blessing I receive working with children. I can’t wait to meet the little personalities that will be in our class and look forward to the blessings your children will be to me! Thank you for the opportunity to be a part of their lives and educational start!”
